5 Lessons from my 5-year journey in Digital Wellness

Recently, I was reflecting on my 5 years journey in Digital Wellness (A journey to improve my relationship with technology)

Looking back 5 years, following are 5 lessons I’ve learnt:

·        You will never have your relationship with technology & screens ‘fixed’. It’s a constant journey of failing, reflecting & improving your relationship with tech.  There will be good days, bad days but it’s important to keep a growth mindset.

·        Digital Wellness is more than ‘fixing your screen time’ . Our relationship with technology is multi-faceted & involves how you use your screens, what you do on your screens, where you use your screens etc. This is especially true after COVID19 when our lives revolve around Screens & Digital Technologies.

·        Digital Wellness Apps (like Google Digital Well Being, Forest, and Freedom etc.) can help you improve your relationship with tech but they are tools that solve just one part of the puzzle.  

·        It’s a complicated problem. Even if I sort my Digital Wellness, you still have to deal with the ‘cultural’ aspect of it. For e.g, the way people around you use your technology. If your boss is expecting you to do meetings late night or your loved one sleeps with phones it will affect your Digital Wellness too

·        Education! Technology is evolving at a rapid pace. The last 3 years has seen an unprecedented rise of tools like Video Calling. But, the question is, are we educating ourselves at the same pace around using these technology tools in a safe & healthy way?

The journey is not easy. It’s important to be kind on yourself & practice self-compassion
