Welcoming Digital Distractions: A Poetic Approach to Digital Wellness
The Digital Guest House (inspired from Rumi’s poem Guest House)
This mind is a guest house,
Every day, a new notification.
A flood of messages, posts, and alerts,
A temporary visitor, sometimes a distraction.
Welcome them all in,
Even the endless scrolling and mindless taps,
The apps that hijack your focus.
For each arrives to teach you something,
About control, presence, or perhaps letting go.
The dopamine rush of a “like” or a ping,
Meant to seduce, but don’t let it stay too long.
Treat each impulse as a guide,
To remind you to pause, to breathe,
To reclaim your time.
Be grateful for whatever comes,
A craving for connection, a need for validation,
Because they might be clearing you out
For new awareness, for mindful habits.
The exhaustion from constant consumption,
That too, has its place.
Greet it with a smile, knowing
It signals the need to recharge—
To step away from the screen.
Beyond the buzzing notifications,
There is stillness waiting to be found.
Make space for it, and open the door
To moments of true connection and peace.
